Infusion, No Sound No Movement is a rhythmic assault to the senses, a collaboration of world music and dance drawing on ancient rhythms and contemporary and traditional West African dance.

Lucky Lartey and the Jamestown Collective bring audiences an original composition and choreography inspired by traditional African rhythms with new urban beats and contemporary dance.

Presenting their own unique exploration, bringing ancient West African rhythms to life through percussion and dance, Infusion, No Sound No Movement looks at ways to reinvent rhythm in a contemporary setting, using ritual, games and everyday music and sounds from life in Ghana to inspire a rich musical and dance landscape.

Latin Jazz Network’s critic Raul de Gama noted that with Palacio de la Rumba “there is a wild celebration here… a riot of tone, colour, tempos, ensemble and balance – all seem effortless and intuitively right”.

Palacio de la Rumba big band artists are: Gai Bryant and Julian Gough on saxophones, Eamon Dilworth and Danny Carmichael on trumpets, Paul Weber on trombone, Colin Burrows on bass trombone, Alister Spence on piano, Steve Elphick on double bass, Antonio Marquéz, Kent Windress and Giorgio Rojas on percussion with dancers Adrian Medina, Israel Ortiz, Emma Vazquez Borges and Tim Harrington.

AFRO NOMAD

AFRO NOMAD fuses traditional West African music with blues, funk, soukous and Latin jazz to create an energetic and soulful performance that guarantees to get the dancefloor jumping with their hypnotic African Rhythms and haunting melodies. Malin Sylla is the creative force behind the group whose original compositions are played on the sweetly rustic strings of the melodic Kora or “African harp”.

AFRO GLAM DANCE

Afro Glam is an Afro beat dance group by an all-female dance ensemble led by Mina Glam. Their performances are inspired by indigenous dance forms from Reunion Island, the Caribbean, as well as traditional and urban dances from West Africa. They combine   modern dance styles to create an engaging, fun and unique performance experience.

In Sydney they have performed in different festivals and events as well as facilitating dance workshops. Their aim is to inspire young girls and African girls to believe in their passion.

OYOBI is a musical journey to the primordial world using rhythm and machines. It’s a project that encompasses a deep knowledge of Afro Latin folkloric traditions and a passion for European electronic sounds.

OYOBI fuses this knowledge with modern production techniques, drum machines, and percussion to create live compositions that captivate the audience. Featuring some of Australia’s most renowned talents Godriguez on guitar, Adm Ventoura on bass, Vincent Sebastian on percussion/drum machines and LA-based vocalist and violinist Quetzal Guerrero aka QVLN.

BRISAS DEL PERU

Brisas del Peru is a young Sydney-based Peruvian, folkloric dance group founded in 2007. With over 25 dancers from ages 4 to 25, Brisas aims to keep their culture alive through Peruvian music, for Australia to witness the wonders of Peru.

Their colourful and embroidered costumes directly made from Peru will catch the attention of many. The energy, freedom, fun and rhythms of traditional music combined with contemporary rhythms make sure everyone enjoys Brisas del Peru. Being the first group in Sydney to incorporate fusions and showcase less known Peruvian dances, they aim to show different influences in their music such as the Afro Peruvian show prepared for Afro Latino Festival.

AFRO INFUSION FASHION SHOWCASE

This year Afro Latino fashion showcase is featuring stylists, fashion designers and an empowerment collaboration from across the motherland and the diaspora to come together under one place to display emerging talent. The showcase aims to create a sense of oneness throughout this vibrant community.

2 talented individuals hope to inspire the next generation of young girls of colour through a variety of natural and creative hairstyles. These little girls will also be wearing T-shirts with an empowering message. The purpose is to give the young girls aged 6 and under a sense of pride and a fierce attitude to life.

Johjos – a range of handmade accessories created from wax cotton that traditionally was born in Indonesia as batiks, transported by the Dutch, and found a welcoming home on the African continent. The vibrant pieces range from eye-catching clutches and iPad cases to neckpieces, earrings, belts and kimonos, expressing a relatable cultural hybridity found amongst today’s modern travelling society. Creator, Mayen Benson, is a Nigerian-born British/Australian whose creativity draws inspiration from her travels and a lust for colour.

2 Sydney – 2 Sydney stylist is the brain child of Niwa Mburuja (#niwaeats #niwatravels #niwawears) and Wanyika Mshila (clothing label Wa-Nyika). The two friends came together over a shared love for style, culture, self-expression, adventure, empowerment and different world aesthetics. The duo is also inspired by their home city Sydney, and they love to explore the different creative avenues it has to offer. It is this explorative and open minded nature that they bring to their styling and creative direction in photoshoots, runways and costume design.

EVELYN GARCIA – Afro Latino Festival MC

Evelyn Garcia has been an active performer since 1995. Her passion for her ethnic roots fused with performing arts has seen her voyaging amongst many genres of performances – from dancing Flamenco, Rio Platense folklore, Tango, Salsa, Mexican folklore, Samba to her charismatic work behind the mics of a few Spanish speaking radio programs such as: Juventud en Rio, Zona Latina, and Latinos FM. This work has taken her onto many national and international spotlights as a bilingual MC and also as a freelance journalist covering both the 2007 & 2008 Festival de Viña del Mar.
